The IBM 3494 TotalStorage (TM) Enterprise Automated Tape Library is a
tape cartridge library designed to provide high availability of customer
data in both S/390 and Open Systems environments. Its affordable,
modular design helps allow the 3494 to grow as your business grows.
Flexible configuration choices start at a single frame with up to two
tape drives and up to 240 tape cartridges. Optional drive, storage, and
Virtual Tape Server units may be added as needed, to create an automated
tape library with up to 76 physical tape drives, 512 virtual tape drives,
or up to 6,240 tape cartridges. Choices in tape drives for the 3494 can
be the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592, the IBM TotalStorage
Enterprise Tape Drive 3590, or the IBM 3490E. Different tape drives can
be installed in different frames in the same 3494 library. The 3494
supports a variety of IBM and Open Systems hosts including IBM eServer
zSeries, S/390*, IBM eServer pSeries, RS/6000*, IBM eServer iSeries,
AS/400*, Sun**, HP, and Intel-compatible servers running Microsoft
Windows** NT, 2000, and 2003. Also available are unique optional models
such as the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise High Availability Tape Frames
(HA1 Frames) and the IBM TotalStorage Virtual Tape Server (VTS). The HA1
Frames provide a second tape cartridge accessory and library manager for
high library availability and performance. The VTS is designed to
combine the speed of disk, the advantages of virtual tape drives, the
capacity and reliability of IBM 3590 tape technology, and the automation
of the 3494 to create a self-contained hierarchical storage management
subsystem. All this, in addition to remote console support, Simple
Network Management Protocol (SNMP) reporting capabilities, multi-host
attachment, and modular design, assist in making the 3494 flexible, easy
to use, and well-suited for automated tape library solutions.

personnel.
Model Description 3494-D10
The Tape Drive Expansion Frame Model D10 is a single frame that can
contain mounting hardware for one 3490E Model C1A or C2A or up to two
3490E Model F1A Tape Drives, and storage cells for 300 tape cartridges.
With no tape drives installed, the cartridge storage capacity is 400.
The 3490E is mounted in the bottom rear of the unit and the storage cells
are located above and on the door.
Investment Protection
The Model D10 offers granularity and flexibility by being capable of
holding either a single tape transport (C1A) or dual tape transport unit
(C2A).
System Management
The Model D10 is part of a tape automation solution to satisfy a wide
range of system management requirements. Benefits include: improved
accuracy/security in tape handling, automated data migration/management,
potential for reducing DASD growth, enables new applications, reduces
access time to data, reduces or may eliminate operator labor and the
potential for floor space reduction. These benefits should result in
increased system availability, improved system reliability, and reduced
overall system management cost.
Business Solutions
The Model D10 is part of a solution that significantly reduces tape
handling, resulting in reduced operations cost and improved data accuracy
and security. Automated save/restore and data migration reduces access
time to data and increases system utilization.
The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive Expansion Frame Model D10
consists of one compartment capable of holding one IBM 3490E Model C1A or
C2A Magnetic Tape Subsystem, or up to two 3490E Model F1A Tape Drives,
and 300 or 400 storage cells for one-half inch tape cartridges.
Up to fifteen Model D10s can be attached to a Model L10, L12 or L14.
If more than eight frames are attached to a 3494, one drive frame (Model
D10, D12, or D14 or feature number 5300, 5302, or 5304) must be located
in the first eight frames.
The Model D10 must be attached to a Model L10, L12, or L14.
One feature #9003 must be applied to the Models L10, L12, or L14 for
each Model D10 that is attached in the first eight frames. One feature
#9005 must be applied to the Model L10, L12, and L14 and also each Model
D10 that is attached in the 3494s with greater than eight frames. This
is required to assure that proper cables are shipped and configuration
records are correct.
If the configuration of frames in an installed 3494 needs to be
changed, for example if frames must be moved from one 3494 to another,
then an RPQ must be processed before the library can be reconfigured. An
RPQ is required for moving feature numbers 5300, 5302, 5304, and 5400, or
Models B16 VTS, D10, D12, D14, and S10 which will ensure that the proper
cables are available.
Magstar 3490E Tape Drives in the Model D10 may be attached to any of
the following host processors. Data interface is dependent on model of
drive unit attached. Refer to the 3490E sales manual for details.

Software support for tape drives in the Model D10 is provided by the
following offerings:
iSeries or AS/400
3490E requires OS/400 3.1 or later
3494 #5211 AS/400 Host Attachment needed for releases prior to V3R6
BRMS/400 2.3.0 or later, optional but recommended
R/DARS 1.3.0 or later
New Level of Support for iSeries or AS/400 (V3R1 or later)
Based on user-defined policies BRMS/400, V3R1 with Media Storage
Extensions (MSE) installed, automatically recalls database files from
tape devices to DASD. No change is required to the requesting
application, which resumes once the file has been restored on DASD. This
capability is especially useful with tape automation, as provided by the
3494, which provides the capability for unattended operation, and
improves end-user access time to archived information.
The automatic migration of database files between DASD and tape
devices essentially treats removable tape media as an extension of DASD,
from an application point of view. Vast amounts of additional data are
available, at a lower cost per megabyte than DASD, but at a reduced
performance level. New mass storage applications now become more
affordable.
Fast search is supported by BRMS/400 for the IBM 3490E and 3590 Tape
Drives in the Enterprise Tape Library 3494. The location of a file on
tape is kept with the BRMS/400 tape inventory, allowing these tape drives
to do a fast-forward to the point where the requested file starts. The
total time required to restore data from tape is reduced.
zSeries, S/390, or ES/9000
z/OS or OS/390 (MVS) and DFSMS 3490E support:
z/OS Version 1.1 or OS/390 Version 2.6 and their associated levels of
