The EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure is a high-function,
high-density SCSI storage expansion unit intended to work in a rack or
tower. It can support up to fourteen Ultra-320 SCSI drives on a single
logical bus.
It supports high availability functions such as redundant and hot
pluggable power supplies and fans.
Internal system management supports error LED indications for power
supplies, fans, disk drives, and SCSI Bus Expander and Enclosure Services
Module.
External system management is supported via the SAF-TE (SCSI Accessed
Fault-Tolerant Enclosures) interface on the SCSI bus. Shared SCSI buses
are supported for twin-tailed clustering solutions.
EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure supports easy customer
servicing. Most replaceable items and components are easily accessible
for replacement from either the front or the back.
The EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure SCSI Bus Expander and
Enclosure Services Module allows LVD signaling and Ultra-320 (up to
320MB/s) speed data transfers to the drives, up to double the maximum
data rate of the EXP300 Storage Unit.
The EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure is available in three
models:

Optional SCSI Bus Expander and Enclosure Services Module
(ESM) (59P5018)
The Optional ESM allows the EXP400 to support twin tailing and
clustering. Twin tailing extends the sharing of the EXP400 to two
servers. Clustering increases data availability in case of server
failure.
Allows for two systems to attach to the EXP400
Note: For information on the IBM Statement of Limited Warranty,
The EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure enables you to expand the
storage capacity of your system beyond the physical limitations of the
server. A 14-bay enclosure can provide up to 2TB of externally attached
storage based on installed HDDs. The available twin-tailing clustering /
split bus feature allows two servers to access the data.
Protect your business-critical data economically by installing an
EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure to handle your data storage
applications.
EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure supports up to 14 slim-high,
hot-plug Ultra-320 disk drives.
It comes with a single backplane that supports two independent SCSI
channels of up to seven disk drives each. However, in twin-tailed,
clustered environments utilizing dual host controllers cabled separately
to EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure, only a single logical bus of
14 drives is supported.
Optional VHDCI to VHDCI external SCSI cables are supported between the
SCSI controller and the EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure SCSI box.
The EXP400 will ship standard with one 2m SCSI cable.
The EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure SCSI hot-swap backplane
supports only SCA-2 direct dock disk drives. The drive options come
complete with the new non-interposer drive tray. It will come with a set
of 14 dummy drive bezels standard. These must be removed as drive
options are loaded into the EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure.
Two 500-Watt, hot-pluggable redundant power supply/fan units are
standard in the 1733-1RU and 1733-1RX. The two fans are redundant such
that a single fan can provide adequate cooling for the EXP400 External
SCSI Storage Enclosure. A single power supply supports up to 14
slim-high, high-performance disk drives. The small fan at the rear of
the PSU comes on only if the primary fan in the other PSU fails. This is
to prevent the backflow of air into the PSU.
The EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure ships with only a single
ESM installed in 1RU and 1RX models. A blank covers the hole where the
second ESM module would normally reside. The second ESM is now optional.
Model 2RX ships with two ESMs installed.
Related Options
Rack to Tower Conversion Kit (09N7296)
This is the same rack to tower conversion kit used by EXP300. This
kit enables the EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure rack-drawer to be
converted to a tower configuration. This economical conversion kit
provides flexibility for customers who prefer tower configurations of the
EXP400 or need this configuration at a later date.
Optional SCSI Bus Expander and Enclosure Services Module (ESM)
(59P5018)
The Optional ESM allows the EXP400 to support twin tailing and
clustering. Twin tailing extends the sharing of the EXP400 to two
servers. Clustering provides higher availability of data in case of
server failure.
The EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure Rack to Tower Conversion
Kit includes a 3U tower stand and covers. When used as a tower, four
rack/tower switches must be set. These switches are on the ESMs in the
back of the EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure. These switches will
reverse the SCSI IDs of the drives and reverse the location of the
power-on LED and composite fault LED.
Energy Star Compliance
No.
Note: The Energy Star emblem does not represent EPA endorsement of any
product or service.
EXP400 External SCSI Storage Enclosure is designed to comply with the
PCI 2.2 and PCI-X 1.0 Specifications.
Planning Information
Configurations
On the rear panel of EXP400 is one or two ESMs, each with a .8-mm
VHDCI connector. These modules interface with the hot-swap backplane.
This design enables Multiple configurations for various conventional and
clustering configurations.
Configuration One -- Two Independent SCSI Buses
When configuring an EXP400 External Storage with the two buses
independent of each other, one external SCSI cable is attached from the
SCSI controller to one of the ESMs on the back of the EXP400 storage
unit. From the same or a separate server, a second external SCSI cable
is attached from a SCSI controller to the other ESM on the back of the
EXP400. This configuration provides a high-availability solution for
duplexing or mirroring up to seven disk drives by using a supported
ServeRAID controller. Or it allows a user to have external storage for
two servers at for the purchase price of only one enclosure.
Configuration 2 -- One Bus
The EXP400 can be configured as a single 14-drive SCSI channel. One
external SCSI cable connects the SCSI controller and one of the ESMs,
located on the back of the EXP400. This configuration is used with a
RAID controller to protect stored data in the event of a drive failure.
Configuration 3 -- Twin-tailing with ServeRAID Controllers
A cluster of 13 drives on a single SCSI bus can be configured on a
Netfinity EXP400 using an IBM ServeRAID family controller. An external
SCSI cable is connected between the SCSI adapter of one server and to a
connector on the back of the EXP400 unit. A second external SCSI cable
attaches a second ServeRAID SCSI controller installed in a second server
to the other connector.
The device unit is a 19-inch, rack-mounted, 3-EIA-unit-high assembly
designed to house up to 14 (1-inch) disk storage devices for attachment
to the SCSI interface. The 14 devices are housed in the front of the
unit. It provides all necessary power generation/distribution from main
voltage input
Height: 128 mm
Width: 445 mm
Depth: 552 mm
Minimum Weight: 23 kg (51 lbs)
Maximum Weight: 38 kg (85 lbs)
Floor Standing Unit
An optional Rack to Tower Conversion Kit allows the EXP400 External
SCSI Storage Enclosure to become a floor-standing tower. The
rack-mounted unit is enclosed in a floor-standing cover set with the unit
rotated counter-clockwise through 90 degrees. A switch at the rear of
the unit is set differently for the rack-mounted and floor-standing
versions to control the assignment of SCSI addresses and LED indicators.
